CATÁLOGO DE INVESTIGACIONES | AÑO ACADÉMICO 2022-2023 33 genetic varability plantain rapid Determination of the Genetic Variability of the Puerto Rican Plantain Plantains, members of the Musaceae family, are one of the most important foods in Puerto Rico, which has propitiated the cultivation of this plant in many backyards. This extensive cultivation in different island areas could have generated genetic variation in this plant. Furthermore, the genetic composition of the cultivars influences the expression of various agronomic characteristics as well as their disease resistance potential. Therefore, the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method will be employed to identify distinct genotypes and provide a specific taxonomic classification. This technique does not require prior knowledge of the DNA sequence to be evaluated. And the various plantain varieties in Puerto Rico, as well as their possible genetic markers associated with traits of interest in pathogens that threaten crops, will be identified. One of these threats is represented by the fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum Cubense f. sp. cubense (foc), responsible for the Fusarium Wilt of Banana. However, Banana Bunchy Top Virus, Black Sigatoka, and Moko Disease are also recognized for causing symptoms similar to Fusarium and affecting crop quality. kaizmyl y. morales villafañe centro de enseñanza e investigación en biotecnología y agrobiotecnología mentor: dra. ana e. pérez matos
