80 ESCUELA DE ARQUITECTURA Understanding The Potential Of Natural Reserves in Order to Achieve a Social, Economic and Environmental Rehabilitation Impact in Our Society Through Exposing, Rehabilitating and Promoting These Typically Segregated Areas Natural Reserves are areas of land that are classified as “protected areas” in order to preserve and protect a habitat in which its flora and fauna may be rare or endangered. Just designating them as “protected areas” doesn’t mean that they are being protected from danger. Many natural reserves in the world are unknown to their locals, not accessible, segregated, and forgotten. A very critical fact is that most of these protected areas have little or no spatial integration at all with other protected areas and/or local communities. One concept that has a direct relationship with “spatial integration” is boundaries. Boundaries should be worked on in order to achieve spatial integration with our local communities and avoid segregation. We must educate our society in acknowledging that these typically segregated areas are more than just protected areas. These natural reserves, besides offering a variety of ecosystems that we must aim to protect, are areas that should be exposed to the public via knowledge; rehabilitate and promote them in order to maintain these areas in the future. A personal take on borders/boundaries is that the idea of a “physical border” is critical to these protected areas, since it generates a level of importance. The border should be programmed and worked on. Which generates the idea of an architectural proposal that is based on the border/boundary of a nature reserve. A proposal that may contribute a positive impact on these areas while working in an area where it may be allowed some type of development without jeopardizing the regulations designated to the specific area. yamilex colón colón bachillerato en arquitectura mentor: arq. pedro a. rosario, arq. jesús o garcía y arq. manuel de lemos nature reserves environmental rehabilitation steel sustainability tropical architecture
