92 RECINTO DE ARECIBO A Protocol of a Systematic Review on the Effects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and Risk of Suicide by Latin Adolescents in Puerto Rico with Major Depressive Disorder This investigation is focused on the foremost premise of behavioral medicine, the preservation and continuation of life. The research problem is to describe, identify, explain, and provide connections to the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and risk of suicide by Latino adolescents in Puerto Rico with a major depressive disorder. The objectives are to explain how the biopsychosocial model can provide a correlation between variables under review. Explore connection between major depressive disorder and Latino adolescents through the biopsychosocial model. To conduct a systematic review between SSRI medication, suicide and Latino youths who suffer from major depressive disorder. Show how dosage of SSRI medication can increase suicidal behavior. Explain how a developing adolescent mind plays a key role in suicidal behavior. Provide possible explanations for why Latin American adolescents are prone to suicide and its behavior. The design is of a descriptive systemic type and of a quantitative nature that comprised seventy-six studies in total between 1997 and 2021, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This investigation is composed of twenty-six scientific studies, thirty-three articles of investigation, five meta-analysis, six books, two cohort studies, two longitudinal studies and one systemic review. It was concluded that the combination of early adverse effects and delayed efficacy in SSRI will lead to discontinuation of medication therapy, thus elevating suicide behavior. Adolescents who start SSRI antidepressant treatment at normal or at higher-than-normal doses have an increase in intentional self-harm. Adolescents receiving SSRI’s have an increased combined risk of non-fatal and fatal suicide acts. Higher rates of suicidal and non-suicidal events occur with depressed adolescents who switched to other SSRI’s. Major depressive disorder and chronic pain enhance and perpetuate suicidal behavior. william bermúdez román doctorado en psicología con especialidad en psicología clínica mentor: dra. melissa carrasco gonzález suicide adolescents antidepressants systemic review neurodevelopment
