ADMINI STRACIÓN DE EMPRESAS 24 Problem Solving Techniques of Human Resources Professionals: The Relationship of Religion and Spirituality in their Coping strategies Interest in religion and spirituality has increased considerably both within culture in general and in workplace environments in particular as people look for a closer relationship between meaning in their lives and in their workplace. Nowadays most organizations no longer view religion and spirituality as a pointless interest, but as a force that can provide significant insight into managerial and leadership issues. This study is intended to determine the relationship between daily spiritual experiences and the level of religious coping in approaches to problem solving in the workplace for Human Resources (HR) Professionals in Puerto Rico. The participants of this study were HR professionals, members of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), located in the Metropolitan area of Puerto Rico. Research about religion and spirituality in the workplace are limited in Puerto Rico, and, given the interest in religion and spirituality, it is apparent that further empirical research on the subject is needed. This research study used a quantitative correlation methodology with two scales that seek to measure the level of spirituality in everyday experience and the level of religiously-based coping strategies when attempting to solve a problem -the Religious Problem- Solving Scale (RPS) by Kenneth Pargament (1999) and the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) by Dr. Lynn G. Underwood (2011). The RPS assesses the participants’ styles and degree of religious coping on an interval scale and recognizes three subscales related to problem solving strategies: Collaborative, Self-Directing, and Deferring. The DSES assesses ordinary experiences of connection with the transcendent in daily life. This study will be a valuable contribution for those in the academic and business world interested in how spiritual and religious beliefs interconnect in problem solving by HR Professionals in the workplace. ángela ramos pérez doctorado en adminstración de empresas mentor: dra. kenya carrasquillo torres religion coping spirituality work environment human resources problem solving
