EDUCACIÓN 132 The effect of electronic texts on the reading comprehension of English language learners in fifth grade in a public school in Lajas Literacy and technology are two important skills needed in today’s society. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of electronic texts in the reading comprehension of fifth grade English language learners in Puerto Rico. The investigation was conducted through a quasi-experimental design. The sample was comprised by three groups from rural elementary schools: one Experimental Group (EG) and two Control Groups (CG). Data was collected through a Reading Comprehension Pre-Posttest designed by the researcher. An attempt was made to answer the following three questions researched: (1) What is the reading comprehension mean score of the Control Groups that received reading instruction through the use of traditional hard copy texts? ; (2) What is the effect of electronic texts in the reading comprehension of Puerto Rican English language learners in fifth grade attending a public school in Lajas?; ( 3) What is the difference between the reading comprehension test scores of Puerto Rican English language learners who use electronic texts and Puerto Rican English language learners who use traditional hard copy texts? Mean score, paired t-test, independent t-test, and ANOVA were conducted in the statistical analysis. Findings demonstrated that the use of electronic texts in reading comprehension with English language learners presented no significant difference between the EG, that developed reading comprehension skills using electronic texts, and the CG1 and CG2 that developed reading comprehension skills using traditional hard copy format. In contrast, findings demonstrated a significant difference and a positive effect in the reading comprehension of the participants in the EG that used electronic texts. The investigator presents a new framework geared toward explaining the process of cognitive assimilation in reading comprehension. linda santiago gonzález doctorado en educación con especialidad en currículo y enseñanza mentor: dra. irma n. rodríguez vega reading comprehension electronic texts modules
