CATÁLOGO DE INVESTIGACIONES | AÑO ACADÉMICO 2015-2016 127 The effect of phonemic awareness instruction activities on the development of alphabet recognition and letter-sound correspondence of Puerto Rican English language learners in kindergarten The current investigation aimed at finding out the effect of phonemic awareness training activities on the development of alphabet recognition and letter-sound correspondence of Puerto Rican English learners in kindergarten. The investigation followed a quasi-experimental design using descriptive and inferential statistics. The research included a pretest and a posttest for the treated (Experimental) group and the comparison (Control) group. There were two kindergarten groups. One was the Experimental group which received phonemic awareness instruction. The other was the Control group which did not receive the phonemic awareness instruction. The researcher analyzed the data using both descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The Experimental group demonstrated a significant difference in phonemic awareness, in alphabet recognition, and in letter-sound correspondence, when comparing the pre and post-test results. There was a significant difference within the Experimental group. Phonemic awareness instruction had a positive effect in the development of alphabet recognition and letter-sound correspondence in Puerto Rican English language learners in kindergarten from a public school in Villalba, Puerto Rico.
