It has been so popularized, that the pharmaceutical industry has commercialized it in capsules, although the consumers can also ingest it naturally as a tea. By taking these supplements without medical supervision, they can bring about not only positive but also negative effects in the way the enzymes are responsible for metabolizing the xenobiotic compounds work. Similarly, there may be some difference depending on the formulation used, whether leaf tea or commercial capsule. The cytochrome P450 system is responsible for metabolizing xenobiotic compounds. This system is composed of a superfamily of hemoproteins that catalyze a number of enzymatic reactions. The 2D6 and 3A4 isoenzymes have the function of metabolizing these compounds, such as M. oleifera . To detect the interaction of isoenzymes with M. oleifera , chinese hamster ovary cells were used. The extract of the leaf is retained for a longer time in the system, which can lead to toxicity in the body.
