catálogo de investigaciones | aÑo académico 2016-2017 71 Spanish Translation and Validation of the Perception or Organizational Politics Scale in a sample of workers in Puerto Rico The aim of this research was to translate and validate the Perception of Organizational Politics Scale (POPS) 15-item short version Likert scale by Kacmar and Carlson (1997) from English to Spanish using the Brislin (1970,1986) back- translation method and administrate the scale in a Puerto Rican sample. The short English version POPS instrument consists of three areas: (a) General Political Behavior; (b) Go Along to Get Ahead, and (c) Pay and Promotion Policies. The study is based on the Theory of Justice by John Rawls (1971) on moral reflection as well as about the principles of distributable equality and fairness within a society and the second theory is the Item Response Theory (IRT). The study had a quantitative approach and a non-experimental and transversal design. Two certified professional bilingual translators from Puerto Rico were recruited to back-translate the English short version POPS instrument to Spanish. The sample consisted of 205 participants. The snowball sampling, which is sometimes called word of mouth, was used to reach the participants. The statistical analysis used to measure the Spanish version POPS instrument was an Exploratory Factor Analysis and the Coefficient Alpha formula (Cronbach’s Alpha) to validate the scale and to determine which items will remain in the final version. The results showed that the Spanish version was constructed into 13-item and has a Cronbach’s Alpha of .87 and divided into two factors. The Brislin back-translation proved to be an efficient method for the translation of the POPS scale as well produced positive results from the study.
