CATÁLOGO DE INVESTIGACIONES | AÑO ACADÉMICO 2017-2018 111 The Identity Crisis in Puerto Rican Architecture Puerto Rico’s colonization in the 1490’s and its re- colonization in the 1890’s have led to an atrophied and confusing development of its cultural, political identity. This is also reflected in its architecture. The purpose of this project is to serve as a personal exploration, and to offer Puerto Ricans a place to explore and discover the nature of their cultural identity, and a means for presenting themselves to international visitors. A museum and library have been selected as the main programs because the museum serves as a place for exploration, introspection, discovery and introduction, while a library serves as a place for learning and an empirical means to review the past and learn from it. Both are complemented by a restaurant, which serves as a place for amiable discussion of different perspectives. christinne y. martínez tejada bachillerato en arquitectura mentor: arq. luis v. badillo, arq. jesús o. garcía y arq. luis ayala architecture puerto rican culture identity crisis politics
