38 CIENCIAS Pigments from Sargassum sp. for low-cost photovoltaic solar cell performance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell using natural pigments is a lowcost, easy fabrication, and ecofriendly technology. Natural pigments like Chlorophyll and Fucoxanthin are part of the composition of Sargassum sp. which can be a problem at high concentrations on the Caribbean beaches. Both pigments increase the light absorption during the photosynthesis process. The use of Chlorophyll and Fucoxanthin extracted from Sargassum sp. as sensitizer is an innovative idea. This project seeks to evaluate these natural pigments taking into consideration photophysical properties such as optical absorption and emission spectrum. The structure composition of these pigments has conjugate bonds and alkoxylate functional groups, which act as the anchoring site to the semiconductor surface (TiO2). The affinity of alkoxylate groups for the semiconductor surface is expected to sensitize the wide bandgap semiconductor material and improve the photosensitization process. A synergetic effect of both pigments should enhance panchromatic light absorption. The optoelectronic parameters of extracted dyes were obtained using the J-V curve that gives the principal parameters for solar cell characterization (Jsc,Voc, FF and %ղ). As a result of the synergetic effect, the constructed cell using mixed dyes (1:1) as a sensitizer had the maximum efficiency (0.0025%). elbannette rodríguez ortiz maestría en ciencias con especialidad en química mentor: dr. luis álamo nole sargassum renewable energy solar cells pigments
