26 ADMINISTRACIÓN DE EMPRESAS University Social Responsibility: Assessment Among Three Higher Education Systems in Puerto Rico Many universities in Puerto Rico claim that they are socially responsible, however, very little is known about such practices. This quantitative study explored, compared, and analyzed the university social responsibility initiatives within Puerto Rico’s three largest university systems (in terms of student enrollment) from the standpoint of full-time faculty members. The researcher proposes to use the results of this study for institutional self-assessment purposes in order to develop successful USR programs taking into account its internal and external stakeholders to significantly influence the development of a better Puerto Rican society with global impact. In this study the researcher compared the USR of the three university systems selected, based on the four USR processes as defined by Vallaeys, de la Cruz, and Sasia (2009); Vallaeys (2014): management processes, teaching processes, research process and extension processes. In addition, this study investigated what socially responsible activities these higher education institutions actually performed; if such activities were managed by institutional headquarter officials, individual campus administrators, scattered student-faculty initiatives, or other. Furthermore, it identified if USR were measured for results, what were the institution’s motivations, reporting methods and accountability practices. Statistical tests such as ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis were employed to test the hypotheses, while post hoc tests were used to identify which university system was significantly different from the others. Findings from the study revealed that there was significant difference in the knowledge of full-time faculty members from the public, the private non- profit-religious university, and the private non-profit-secular university about their management, teaching and extension processes in their respective USR. However, the study found that there was no significant difference in the knowledge of full-time faculty members from the public university, the private non-profit-religious university, and the private non- profit-secular university about their research processes. eva m. cabán garcía doctorado en administración de empresas mentor: dr. edgar rodríguez ríos university social responsibility corporate social responsibility university stakeholders university mission puerto rico universities
