Why don’t you raise your hands if you believe that the world now has become faster, more complex and involves more changes? Please raise your hands, and even though I am not there, magically I can predict exactly what is happening. I guess about ninety percent of hands are in the air, please put them down now and we all believe that we are living in a very complicated complex world, and the military has given us useful acronyms to describe it. The military tells us we live in a world that’s become VUCA. It is Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity, and I want to frame my comments around this idea, because VUCA has enormous implications for leadership, and how we lead, and the leaders in the Catholic tradition that I will speak of will show and reinforce how important and difficult leadership is in times of VUCA.
