I don’t know here in Puerto Rico, but we have many faculties that are not catholic. So even if that is a moment for dialogue, that would be my point. I’m starting with this little story which really impacted me and also, it tells where we are going in academia. Now I will go to the catholic Church and the interreligious dialogue so, where is the theology as catholics, where should we look for the Church teaching on interreligious dialogue. I will start with Vatican II that marks the inaugural instance of a church council addressing other world religions in a very structured and also empathetic manner. This perspective is dispersed across several of its 16 documents with a pivotal introductory statement in paragraph 16 of the council’s dogmatic constitution of the church, Lumen gentium. Following an exploration of connections with different Christian groups, in paragraph 15, the council bishops turn their attention to discussing Jews and Muslims. Quote: Finally those who have not yet accepted the gospel are related to the people of God in various ways. There is first that people to whom the covenants and promises were made, and from whom Christ was born in the flesh. A people in virtue of their election beloved for the sake of the fathers, for God never regrets his gift or his call, but the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the creator, first among whom, are muslims. They profess to hold the faith of Abraham and together with us they adore the one merciful God who will judge humanity on the last day. This is fundamental, as far as the Jews and the Muslims are concerned we are together. Coming from the faith of Abraham, the people of the book, right? The Jews, Muslims and Christians and also salvation is underneath this text, salvation is a collective thing. We cannot be saved alone, and Pope Francis actually has brought this point. It is a together project, it is something we cannot achieve alone. And again, additional contemplation on the Catholic Church´s interactions with other faiths, particularly Judaism is presented in the council’s declaration on the relationship of the church to non christians, Nostra Aetate.
