A method that, by no means, dilutes the catholic identity of the university because that kind of apparent contradiction that we talk about in the II Vatican Council documents that, on one side, we are called to respect other religions and, on the other hand, we are called to evangelize, to proclaim the gospel. This can be applied here but John Paul II said “No, there is no contradiction between these two”. The catholic university, besides being a locus for dialogue between faith and reason, which are the two pillars of catholic education, is also a locus of intellectual and interreligious dialogue with the ultimate goal of the search for peace and political stability. A more just sharing of the world’s resources, and the new economic and political order that will better serve the human community at a national and international level. So these are some theological reflections from that crucial document for the catholic university. Now Pope Benedict XVI, and I put there in the notes intercultural dialogue. and how to understand that intercultural dialogue that Pope John Paul II is calling us to do now. Pope Benedict is a bridge builder, bridging the university and the interreligious dialogue, and the key he is offering us is truth seeking, always based in the duality between faith and reason. Remember this controversy that happened in 2006. On September 12th to 14th 2006 during the apostolic journey to Munich and Regensburg in Germany Paul Benedict XVI delivered a lecture entitled Faith Reason and the University: memories and reflections. It is a beautiful lecture, if you haven’t read it, read it and l will give you some more of my personal thoughts. This was given at the University of Regensburg so it was an intellectual lecture and the audience of course were professors, students and administrators. The University of Regensburg is a university where he, beginning in 1969, had been a professor, a dogmatic theology professor. So there is a long history of Pope Benedict XVI and the University of Regensburg. Given his predecessor John Paul II did not provide a very clear theological foundation, and I am stressing theological foundation because of the role interreligious dialogue should play within the catholic university. It seems to me that Benedict XVI kind of picked up the pieces and said “Ok there is another layer to reflect on the interreligious dialogue and the catholic university”. He took upon himself the task of addressing this issue, this kind of laguna of Ex corde Ecclesiae. Pope Benedict´s lecture caused an uproar and controversy in the muslim world.
