La Asamblea Legislativa de Puerto Rico aprobó una resolución 54 a 3
respaldando a Piñero. El secretario Krug, ante la situación de Myer, la
renuncia inminente de Tugwell y la ausencia de un consenso, se revocó y
respaldó la nominación de Piñero. Finalmente, el 25 de julio de 1946 el
presidente Truman designó gobernador de Puerto Rico a Jesús T. Piñero.
El 3 de septiembre de 1946 Piñero juramentó como gobernador ante el
juez presidente Martín Travieso. ¡Qué ironía! Juramentar ante el juez
Travieso, su competidor, y ante el secretario Krug, su objetor.
El presidente Harry S. Truman envió un mensaje, que precisaba con
mucho sentido la delicada situación de las lealtades compartidas, así
como el compromiso de desarrollos políticos futuros, diciendo:
Your inauguration is perhaps the most significant in the history of Puerto Rico,
for it marks the first time a governor has been so closely representative of both,
the people of the United States and the people of Puerto Rico. The confidence
and support which is offered you by all the citizens of the United States, both
in the mainland and Puerto Rico must be a source of great satisfaction as well
as an inspiration to you. I am certain that events will prove that confidence
and support amply justified.
Puerto Rico has come a long way since 1898. Much remains to be accomplished,
and I am hopeful that working together we shall see progress along those lines
in the next few years.
